UCW-GA practices "wall-to-wall" organizing across all Georgia's public institutions of higher education.
- This means anyone who gets a paycheck from the University System of Georgia has the opportunity to join the labor movement as a union member!
- Non-employees can also participate in UCW-GA at a minimal dues rate as supporting members.
The only wall-to-wall higher education union in Georgia.
Membership is currently open to anyone who works for the University System of Georgia, including:
- Full-time faculty and staff
- Postdoctoral researchers and fellows
- Graduate assistants, researchers, and fellows
- Part-time faculty, including adjuncts and lecturers
- Part time staff, regardless of permanent or temporary status
- Undergraduate student workers, including federal work-study students
- Workers at institutions whose funding is allocated by the USG, including the Georgia Archives and the Georgia Public Library Service
- Non-employees (as non-voting Supporting Members)
Workers in outsourced departments like Sodexo, Aramark, etc. are private sector employees and have the right to engage in collective bargaining with their employer.
Stronger Together: UCW Across the Southeast and Beyond
In 2024, United Campus Workers of Georgia joined forces with other CWA chapters in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee to become United Campus Workers Southeast, CWA Local 3821. By teaming up across eight states, we’re combining our resources and organizing power to run regional campaigns.
United Campus Workers of Georgia stands in solidarity with our sister UCW locals in Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Public Speaking and Press
Our member-leaders speak proudly and publicly about labor issues in higher education.
- Video, audio, and press releases of UCW-GA members advocating and speaking truth to power can be found on our Press page.
UCW-GA is a division of a larger union, United Campus Workers Southeast, a Local of the Communications Workers of America. So, our members can also get involved in CWA and UCWSE campaigns and committees across the Southeast and beyond!
We have a proven track record of wins.
Power concedes nothing without a demand. Since UCW-GA's founding we have seen:
- Raises in grad student stipends at Georgia State University
- Raises of floor on stipends for grad workers at University of Tennessee–Knoxville
- Raises at Columbus State University for federal work-study student workers
- Raise of floor on wages for benefit-eligible hourly workers at University of Southern Mississippi
- Defeat of the Special Institutional Fee in 2022 by UCW-UGA's campaign, winning a about $1,000 in savings per year for Georgia undergrad and grad students
- Cost of Living Adjustment raises beginning in 2020, after 3 years of UCW-GA's lobbying in the Georgia House and Senate
- Victory for workers in grievance processes, including winning back hours lost by workers after funding cuts, winning new appointments for workers laid off by USG, and defending union members from abuse by supervisors.
- Free on-campus covid-19 testing for students after UCW-GA members petitioned and protested for safety
- A solidarity fund formed at KSU to support workers laid off by UCW
- An increase in retired pensioners
To win widespread, long-lasting change workers must organize a supermajority of USG employees to demand fair compensation and working conditions for all. Put the U in UNION by joining UCW-GA!
