UCW-GA Points of Unity
UCW-GA is united around the demands that ALL campus workers deserve:
- A living wage and just compensation: We demand a base salary high enough and benefits generous enough to provide for ourselves, our families, and live a life of dignity without reliance on government assistance or private charity.
- Worker safety: We demand a safe and secure working environment, free from harassment, coercion, and violence, and from the imposition of working conditions that jeopardize our physical or mental well-being.
- Job protection: We demand employment that is not “at will,” and to not be terminated except for just cause.
- Non-discrimination: We demand fair and equal treatment, opportunities, pay, and benefits regardless of our religion, race, nationality, immigration history, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, disability, or political orientation.
- Due process: We demand a grievance procedure that includes the right to grieve all matters that can impact safety, evaluations, raises, transfers, layoffs, promotions, and disciplinary actions, and we have the right to representation of our choice at all levels.
- Governance of our workplace: We demand democratic participation in determining the content and direction of the institution where we are employed. This includes electing representatives to governing bodies through free and fair elections and protection from retaliation for expressing our views.
- The right to organize: We demand official recognition of our union by the state of Georgia; and for our union to bargain collectively in order to protect and advance the collective interests of college and university employees.
- A democratic labor union: We are committed to ensuring that our labor union adheres strongly to democratic principles, including free, fair, and frequent elections of recallable officers; universal suffrage; equal rights for all our members; freedom of expression; majoritarian decision-making procedures; and respect for our union’s internal rules and procedures.
- Serve our community and students on our campuses: We demand institutions of higher education that provide a meaningful education at an affordable cost for all those who want it for the betterment of our communities and state.
- Universal inclusion: We demand that all student employees, staff, and faculty at public colleges and universities in Georgia be treated equally by the state and top administrators with regard to all of the above rights.
